Global battery demand is set to quadruple to 4,100 gigawatt-hours by 2030, driven by the surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales, according to a new report from Bain & Company. This growth presents significant opportunities and challenges for graphite producers. Lithium-ion batteries, which rely heavily on graphite as a primary anode material, will continue to dominate the market through 2030. Producers must ramp up production and maintain high quality to meet this escalating demand.
Bain’s report highlights that despite the development of new battery technologies such as solid-state and sodium-ion batteries, lithium-ion technology will remain the cornerstone of the EV market. Solid-state batteries promise higher energy densities and improved safety, and sodium-ion batteries offer cost advantages and better performance at lower temperatures. However, these technologies are still in early stages, with commercialization expected only around 2025. Their market share will remain in the single digits, ensuring that lithium-ion batteries, with their established performance and cost advantages, will continue to be the preferred choice.
Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistries will dominate within the lithium-ion category. China will see robust demand for LFP due to established supply chains and improved energy density, while the USA and EU will have a significant share of NMC batteries. This balanced regional demand means graphite producers need to ensure a steady supply of high-purity graphite suitable for both types of batteries.
Cost reductions and performance enhancements in lithium-ion technology are expected to continue. Innovations in anode chemistries, manufacturing processes, and battery management systems will drive these improvements. Graphite producers must invest in research and development to keep up with these advancements, ensuring their products meet evolving industry standards.
The growing emphasis on battery recycling, driven by regulatory pressures and new business models, presents another significant opportunity. As the volume of EV batteries needing recycling increases, so will the demand for recycled graphite. Producers should explore avenues in the recycling sector to recover and repurpose graphite from used batteries.
