Canada-based Graphite One has entered into agreements with Hunan Chenyu Fuji New Energy Technology, a Chinese company specializing in anode active material (AAM) for lithium-ion batteries. These agreements are crucial for Graphite One’s plans and grant Graphite One access to Chenyu’s advanced AAM manufacturing technology and consulting services to support the design, construction, and operation of a planned commercial AAM facility in Warren, Ohio. The consulting services are tied to specific milestones, with fees paid as progress is made.

Anthony Huston, CEO of Graphite One, emphasized the importance of this move, stating, “The United States has zero commercialization of synthetic anode battery materials. The execution of these Agreements represents a critical step in creating domestic supply for the lithium-ion battery materials.”

This development highlights the continued reliance on China for advanced battery technologies in the West. Despite efforts to build a local supply chain, the U.S. and other Western countries still lack the expertise and production capabilities to meet the rapidly evolving needs of the battery industry. Graphite One’s partnership with Chenyu shows how much the industry still depends on Chinese technology to remain competitive.
