NATO has identified 12 raw materials essential for its defence industry. These materials are needed for making advanced systems like military aircraft, tanks, and submarines. The list includes aluminium, cobalt, graphite, and rare earth elements, among others.

Graphite is crucial for manufacturing main battle tanks and corvettes. Its high strength and ability to withstand heat make it a key material for these vehicles. In submarines, graphite is used in hulls and structural components. It helps reduce noise levels, improving stealth capabilities. These qualities make graphite indispensable for modern defence technologies.

By naming these materials, NATO aims to secure their supply to maintain its defence capabilities. This public list is part of a broader strategy to support Allied nations in maintaining access to vital materials.
